Thatcher is remembered as The Iron Lady only because she possessed completely negative traits such as persistent stubbornness and a determined refusal to listen to others.

Every move she made was charged by negativity; she destroyed the British manufacturing industry, she hated the miners, she hated the arts, she hated the Irish Freedom Fighters and allowed them to die, she hated the English poor and did nothing at all to help them, she hated Greenpeace and environmental protectionists, she was the only European political leader who opposed a ban on the ivory trade, she had no wit and no warmth and even her own cabinet booted her out. She gave the order to blow up The Belgrano even though it was outside of the Malvinas Exclusion Zone—and was sailing AWAY from the islands! When the young Argentinean boys aboard The Belgrano had suffered a most appalling and unjust death, Thatcher gave the thumbs-up sign for the British press.

Iron? No. Barbaric? Yes. She hated feminists even though it was largely due to the progression of the women’s movement that the British people allowed themselves to accept that a prime minister could actually be female. But because of Thatcher, there will never again be another woman in power in British politics, and rather than opening that particular door for other women, she closed it.

Thatcher will only be fondly remembered by sentimentalists who did not suffer under her leadership, but the majority of British working people have forgotten her already, and the people of Argentina will be celebrating her death. As a matter of recorded fact, Thatcher was a terror without an atom of humanity.

Congressional Probe: Cover-Up of “Auschwitz-like” Conditions at U.S.-Funded Afghan Hospital

“A Congressional investigation has revealed a top U.S. general in Afghanistan sought to stall an investigation into abuse at a U.S.-funded hospital in Kabul that kept patients in ‘Auschwitz-like’ conditions. Army whistleblowers revealed photographs taken in 2010, which show severely neglected, starving patients at Daoud Hospital, considered the crown-jewel of the Afghan medical system where the country’s military personnel are treated.

The photos show severely emaciated patients, some suffering from gangrene and maggot-infested wounds. The general accused of the cover-up is Lt. General William Caldwell, one of the nation’s highest-ranking commanders in Afghanistan, who served as the commander of the $11.2 billion-a-year Afghan training program.”

Democracy Now! speaks to Michael Hastings, contributing editor at Rolling Stone magazine and a reporter for BuzzFeed, which has been following the story closely. Also some discussion of OWS, DHS and WikiLeaks.

Members of our military turned a blind eye to this for quite a while. Patients going through surgery without anesthesia? really? No food? Medical instruments left in wounds. Maggots crawling out of bandages …

"He’s a very generous person. We give 10 percent of our income to our church every year. Do you think that is the kind of person who is trying to hide things, or do things?"

Ann Romney, in an interview on ABC News, defending her husband for not releasing their tax returns but not noting the irony that only their tax returns can prove what they give to charity. (via liberalsarecool)

Wow, 10 percent, really? That’s super generous. Oh… That’s the number that Mormons are required to tithe to remain in good standing with the church? Oh well, carry on.

Also note that 10% of Romney’s income is more than you will make in your entire life.

D.C. Officer Threatens to Shoot First Lady

hamburgerjack:

WASHINGTON — A District of Columbia police officer has been taken off a motorcycle escort for White House officials after he allegedly said he’d shoot first lady Michelle Obama and “then used his phone to retrieve a picture of the firearm he said he would use,” according to The Washington Post.

Oddly enough in my searches for this, the only source I immediately recognized reporting this was Huffington Post.

Even though I heard it in a quick little headline type read off on CNN, they apparently aren’t on this story, nor any of the other media outlets.

That’s problematic.

And they’re all these short little articles too.

Here’s another source I could find, but with similar information.

Representative Barney Frank and longtime partner, Jim Ready, were married Saturday by Massachusetts Governor Deval Patrick in front of guests including House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi and Senator John Kerry.

They had long discussions about marriage; Mr. Frank wanted to be married while still serving in Washington. Mr. Ready was worried about the public scrutiny. But he remembered how he felt in high school in Tewksbury, Mass., when Mr. Frank came out publicly.

"Naturally the common people don’t want war…. But… it is always a simple matter to drag the people along, whether it is a democracy, a fascist dictatorship, or a parliament, or a communist dictatorship…. All you have to do is to tell them they are being attacked, and denounce the pacifists for lack of patriotism and exposing the country to danger. It works the same in any country.”"

The first Latino president of the United States already has been born.

political-linguaphile:

Henry Cisneros, the former San Antonio mayor who was secretary of the Department of Housing and Urban Development in the Clinton administration, made the suggestion three years ago in an interview with the Spanish-language news service EFE.

“I don’t know if he or she’s in elementary school or in law school or is already elected … to public office, but I believe that that person is already alive, and we’re 20 years or less away from having a Latino or Latina president,” said Cisneros, whose own path to higher office may have been derailed by personal scandal and who today is executive chairman of CityView, an urban development investment firm.

When the day comes that Cisneros predicted, the man or woman behind the resolute desk in the Oval Office will represent an ever-increasing segment of the population. Latinos (or Hispanics, the official government term) made up 15.5% of the U.S. population in 2010, but by 2050 they’re projected to approach 25% of the population.

In case you were wondering why ethnic programs are getting canceled. In case you were wondering why the right is so desperate to eliminate immigration. In case you we’re wondering why the Spanish language is seen as “evil”. In case you were wondering why the Dream Act hasn’t passed. The right is scared of that 25%. Too bad those over 50 million latin@s currently living in the Unites States are virtually unstoppable now. I can’t wait to see the first Latino president.

True patriotism isn’t cheap. It’s about taking on a fair share of the burdens of keeping America going.
