Cherokee Nation Launches History Website
The Cherokee Nation launched a new educational website Wednesday to share the tribe’s true history and culture with the world.
The new site, www.CNHistoryOnline.org, is an interactive, user-friendly source of factual information about Cherokee Nation’s traditional stories, arts and past that can be linked to Twitter and Facebook.
“We now stand on the threshold of sharing our culture, history and rich traditions with everyone on the World Wide Web,” said Principal Chief Bill John Baker. “Now our stories can be told with our Cherokee voice, our history, our culture and our values.”
The site was modeled to look like a book. Visitors that are interested in learning more about Cherokee history can take online history classes, listen to Cherokee elders tell traditional stories, review historical book recommendations and download curriculum for children. It features historical timelines and maps.
Those looking to learn more about culture can find the Cherokee language, get facts about the natural resources used by Cherokees and find descriptions of traditional clothes, jewelry, body art, architecture, food and music. Visitors can also access a kids section or watch digital stories and videos of Cherokee elders and master craftsmen.
The public needs an official source of information on Cherokee history and from a Cherokee perspective, Cherokee Nation Chief of Staff Chuck Hoskin said of his and Chief Baker’s idea for the site.
“We have a unique history as Cherokee citizens and I’m proud to share it with the world,” Hoskin said.
