"He’s a very generous person. We give 10 percent of our income to our church every year. Do you think that is the kind of person who is trying to hide things, or do things?"
Ann Romney, in an interview on ABC News, defending her husband for not releasing their tax returns but not noting the irony that only their tax returns can prove what they give to charity. (via liberalsarecool)
Wow, 10 percent, really? That’s super generous. Oh… That’s the number that Mormons are required to tithe to remain in good standing with the church? Oh well, carry on.
Also note that 10% of Romney’s income is more than you will make in your entire life.

The Mitt Romney Bullying Story
The sad, troubling tale of when a teenage Mitt Romney attacked one of his classmates. The Washington Post found numerous eyewitnesses to verify this incident from 1965. Romney has since apologized.
Mitt Romney, left, with George and Lenore Romney in 1962.
(AP / Handout)BLOOMFIELD HILLS, Mich. — Mitt Romney returned from a three-week spring break in 1965 to resume his studies as a high school senior at the prestigious Cranbrook School. Back on the handsome campus, studded with Tudor brick buildings and manicured fields, he spotted something he thought did not belong at a school where the boys wore ties and carried briefcases. John Lauber, a soft-spoken new student one year behind Romney, was perpetually teased for his nonconformity and presumed homosexuality. Now he was walking around the all-boys school with bleached-blond hair that draped over one eye, and Romney wasn’t having it.
Source: washingtonpost.com“He can’t look like that. That’s wrong. Just look at him!” an incensed Romney told Matthew Friedemann, his close friend in the Stevens Hall dorm, according to Friedemann’s recollection. Mitt, the teenaged son of Michigan Gov. George Romney, kept complaining about Lauber’s look, Friedemann recalled.
Source: washingtonpost.comA few days later, Friedemann entered Stevens Hall off the school’s collegiate quad to find Romney marching out of his own room ahead of a prep school posse shouting about their plan to cut Lauber’s hair. Friedemann followed them to a nearby room where they came upon Lauber, tackled him and pinned him to the ground. As Lauber, his eyes filling with tears, screamed for help, Romney repeatedly clipped his hair with a pair of scissors.
Source: washingtonpost.comThe incident transpired in a flash, and Friedemann said Romney then led his cheering schoolmates back to his bay-windowed room in Stevens Hall.
Friedemann, guilt ridden, made a point of not talking about it with his friend and waited to see what form of discipline would befall Romney at the famously strict institution. Nothing happened.Source: washingtonpost.comAfter the incident, Lauber seemed to disappear. He returned days later with his shortened hair back to its natural brown. He finished the year, but ultimately left the school before graduation — thrown out for smoking a cigarette.
Source: washingtonpost.com“It happened very quickly, and to this day it troubles me,” said (Thomas) Buford, the school’s wrestling champion, who said he joined Romney in restraining Lauber. Buford subsequently apologized to Lauber, who was “terrified,” he said. “What a senseless, stupid, idiotic thing to do.”
Source: washingtonpost.comSometime in the mid-1990s, (Romney’s classmate at Cranbrook) David Seed noticed a familiar face at the end of a bar at Chicago O’Hare International Airport.
“Hey, you’re John Lauber,” Seed recalled saying at the start of a brief conversation. Seed, also among those who witnessed the Romney-led incident, had gone on to a career as a teacher and principal. Now he had something to get off his chest.
“I’m sorry that I didn’t do more to help in the situation,” he said.
Lauber paused, then responded, “It was horrible.” He went on to explain how frightened he was during the incident, and acknowledged to Seed, “It’s something I have thought about a lot since then.”…
Lauber died in 2004 (of liver cancer), according to his three sisters.

Did Biden’s statement on Meet The Press prompt the president to come out in favor of gay marriage?
“President Obama has earned himself plenty of goodwill today for finally announcing his support for marriage equality. But Vice President Biden deserves a lot of credit for steering the administration in the right direction, however inadvertently.”
Nathan Pippenger, “In defense of Biden’s big mouth”
Wow that is going to haunt my nightmares…

Bernie Sanders Takes Down Every Single GOP Presidential Candidate
In a masterful take down, Sen. Bernie Sanders took apart the 2012 GOP presidential field and called them the fringe of American society.
On HBO’s Real Time, host Bill Maher asked about a question about the Republican primary and Sen. Sanders went off,
One of the problems that I see in the Republican primaries is that these guys are so out of touch with the reality that the American people are going through that it is really quite amazing. We are seeing a middle class collapsing. We are seeing poverty increasing. We’re seeing a nation in which the rich are getting richer and we have the most unequal distribution of wealth and income of any major country.
Do they have one word to say about this issue?
We have 50 million people without any health insurance. We are the only country, major country on earth that does not guarantee healthcare to every man, woman, and child as a right. Do you know what their solution is? Cut Medicare. Cut Medicaid. You got Social Security, the most successful government program in the history of our country. A program which has not resulted in one penny of deficit for this country, and you know what they want to do? They want to cut Medicaid. They want to cut Social Security. They want to privatize these important programs.
These guys are way, way out of touch from where the American people are, and I think when you look at them issue by issue — tax breaks for the rich, cut Social Security, more money on defense spending — they are literally a fringe element in American society.
Last but not least, you’ve got virtually every scientist in this world who studies the issue who tells us global warming is a huge, huge problem. We’ve got to move in a very aggressive way to break our dependence on fossil fuel, move to sustainable energy, energy efficiency. These guys don’t even acknowledge the reality of global warming.

"Republicans will need to work hard to capture the Latino vote — instead of their current strategy of capturing Latinos."
STEPHEN COLBERT, The Colbert Report (via inothernews)
| Me: | Wow. Mitt Romney sure looks young. |
| Dad: | Yeah because he's never worked a day in his life. |
In a speech to the Associated Press today, President Obama today boasted that his signature domestic policies were basically conservative (he labeled them “centrist”): his individual mandate, he said, was pioneered by conservatives and the Heritage Foundation; his cap-and-trade policy was first proposed by Bush 41; federal spending is lower now than it was during any year of the Reagan administration, etc. Even the successes most touted by his supporters — the Detroit bailout, TARP, the withdrawal from Iraq — were started by Bush 43. Obama’s foreign policy and civil liberties assaults also, of course, were largely shared by his predecessor and are frequently praised by the Right.
What is needed most — a strong countervailing force to these policies coming from a place other than the neoconservative Right and corporatist oligarchs — is exactly what is missing.
| Conservative: | Legalizing gay marriage will destroy the sanctity of traditional marriage. |
| Intelligent person: | Well, what about divorce? Doesn't divorce destroy the sanctity of traditional marriage as well? If so, why aren't you against divorce? What about people like Kim Kardashian who get married for three months and then get divorced? Should we ban her from ever getting married again? I didn't think so. |
| Conservative: | Legalizing gay marriage will open the doors to other types of marriage, like being able to marry your dog, family member, or several people at once. |
| Intelligent person: | People thought the same thing about interracial marriage and it's been legal for quite some time now. I don't recall any doors being opened to interspecies marriage because of interracial marriage. Furthermore, there are several states that allow you to marry your first cousin and I believe that door was opened by traditional marriage, not gay marriage. |
| Conservative: | Legalizing gay marriage will redefine the word "marriage". |
| Intelligent person: | Words are redefined every day and people don't seem to mind. If they redefined the word "marker", would you protest it because "marker" has had a set definition for years? Switching around a few words so that same-sex couples are included in the definition cannot and will not affect your existing marriage in any way, shape, or form. |
| Conservative: | Marriage is about reproducing. Two people of the same sex cannot reproduce. |
| Intelligent person: | What about sterile men and infertile women? They're still allowed to get married. Why not ban that as well? And if you want to get technical, gay couples can reproduce via a surrogate, but that's probably a little too technical for you, Mr. Conservative. |
| Conservative: | Legalizing gay marriage will devalue existing traditional marriages. |
| Intelligent person: | If two total strangers living several hundred miles away from you getting married affects your marriage somehow, then I don't think your marriage was that strong to begin with. |
| Conservative: | The Bible states that marriage is between a man and a woman. |
| Intelligent person: | The Bible says a lot of things, but this country is not governed by what the Bible says. This country is governed by what the Constitution says and the first amendment states, "Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof." |
| Conservative: | Marriage and family go hand-in-hand. In order to properly raise a child, the child must have a mother and a father. If we legalize gay marriage and same-sex couples raise children, the children will grow up confused. |
| Intelligent person: | A child does not need to have both a mother and a father in order to grow up secure and successful. If you don't believe me, you can visit the man who lives in the White House. As for same-sex couples raising children, several scientific studies have concluded that being raised by same-sex parents does not affect a child's self-esteem, gender identity, or emotional health. |
| Conservative: | Gay marriage is against my religious belief and as an American I reserve the right to religious freedom. |
| Intelligent person: | Really? Gays getting married will not take your religious freedom away. You're allowed to believe in whatever you want, but you're not allowed to try and impose your beliefs on me by trying to take my rights away. That is not religious freedom. |
